Slab installation is also needed when an existing slab has failed and needs to be replaced rather than repaired, or when a new structure is going in on a site that has never had a concrete base.
The requirements for a slab depend on what's going on top of it. A slab for a storage shed has different thickness and PSI requirements than a garage floor that handles vehicle weight and potentially stored equipment. We ask about the intended use at the estimate stage so the spec is right for the load.

We assess the site, confirm the appropriate thickness and mix spec, and provide a free written estimate. Once approved, we prepare the subbase with proper grading and compaction, set forms to level, and pour using concrete batched to the right PSI and air content for the application. For interior slabs and covered applications, air entrainment isn't required. For any slab with outdoor exposure, we spec accordingly. We finish the surface and let it cure fully before the area is loaded.

Standard residential garage floors and shed slabs are usually 4 inches. Slabs that support heavier equipment, stored loads, or vehicles heavier than passenger cars call for 5 to 6 inches or more. We confirm the right thickness for your application during the site assessment.

For slabs on grade, wire mesh or fiber reinforcement helps control shrinkage cracking. Structural slabs or slabs subject to significant load may require rebar at defined spacing based on the load calculation. The right reinforcement depends on the application. We'll advise on what your slab needs.

Foot traffic is typically possible after 24 to 48 hours. Placing heavy items or driving on the slab should wait at least 7 days, when the concrete has reached about 70% of its design strength. Full cure takes 28 days. We give you a specific timeline for your pour based on the mix and the weather at the time.

Cold weather affects concrete curing. Concrete cures best at temperatures above 50°F. Pours in cold conditions require precautions, including heated materials or insulating blankets, to ensure the concrete cures properly. We'll discuss your timeline and any cold-weather requirements when you call.

Permit requirements depend on what the slab is for. A slab for a small accessory structure may not require a permit in all cases. A slab that's part of a structural addition or a larger project will.
