Concrete Retaining Wall Construction in Flushing, NY: Grade Control Built to Last

A retaining wall that bulges, leans, or fails isn't a repair project. It's a rebuild, and often an emergency.

A retaining wall manages the grade difference between two elevations on a property. It holds back soil, manages drainage, and keeps the ground where it's supposed to be. A wall that isn't built for the load and the drainage conditions behind it doesn't last. We construct concrete retaining walls, both poured and block, for residential and commercial properties across NYC, using our own concrete and masonry materials on every job. Call (718) 939-3245 for a free estimate.

New retaining wall construction for a sloped lot, tiered yard, or grade differential at a property line. Replacement of a failed, leaning, or structurally compromised existing wall. Retaining walls for parking lot edges, building perimeters, raised planting areas, and commercial site applications. These are the most common scenarios we see across Flushing and the surrounding boroughs.

Signs a wall needs attention include visible leaning or bowing, cracking at joints or through the wall face, soil or water weeping through or around the wall, and gaps forming between the wall and the property above it. A wall actively tipping or showing signs of movement is a safety concern. The NYC Administrative Code is direct on the responsibility: Section 28-305 requires that when a property owner sets grade higher or lower than an adjoining property, they must erect and maintain a retaining wall of sufficient structure and drainage, entirely at their own expense. Retaining walls ten feet or higher facing a public right-of-way carry additional inspection and reporting requirements.

WHEN YOU NEED CONCRETE RETAINING WALL CONSTRUCTION

OUR CONCRETE RETAINING WALL CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Call (718) 939-3245 and describe the wall: location, approximate height, length, what's being retained, and any known drainage issues. We assess the site, evaluate the load conditions and existing drainage, and determine whether poured concrete or reinforced block construction fits the application. We provide a free written estimate. Once approved, we excavate and prepare the footing, construct the wall, install drainage aggregate and pipe behind the wall to manage water pressure, and backfill properly. For walls that require engineered drawings based on height and load, we confirm those requirements at the assessment stage.

CONCRETE RETAINING WALL CONSTRUCTION COST IN FLUSHING

Cost depends on wall height, length, construction method, existing wall removal if needed, drainage requirements, and site access. Taller walls and those carrying surcharge loads from vehicles or adjacent structures add to the scope. We provide free written estimates before any work begins. Call (718) 939-3245.

WHY CHOOSE US

55+ years in New York City's concrete and masonry industry. Because we supply our own concrete and block, every retaining wall we build uses material we stand behind. Third-generation experience in the trade means we understand load, drainage, and what NYC's freeze-thaw climate does to a wall that wasn't built to handle it. We give honest estimates and build to last.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Block retaining walls use CMU laid with mortar and rebar through the hollow cores, filled with grout for strength. They accommodate curves and corners and are well-suited for walls up to about four feet. Poured concrete retaining walls are formed and poured monolithically with rebar, creating a single solid structure better suited for taller walls, high-load applications, or situations where the wall needs to span without joints. Both are valid approaches depending on the site conditions and scope.

  • Always. Water pressure that builds up behind a retaining wall is one of the primary causes of wall failure, particularly in NYC's freeze-thaw climate. Proper drainage aggregate and perforated pipe behind the wall move water away from the retained soil before pressure can build. We install drainage as a standard part of every retaining wall we build.

  • It depends on height and load. Taller walls, walls carrying vehicle surcharge loads, and walls adjacent to structures or public rights-of-way may require engineered drawings. Under NYC Administrative Code Section 28-305.4, retaining walls ten feet or higher that face a public right-of-way require inspection by a licensed qualified retaining wall inspector every five years. We identify engineering requirements at the assessment stage and advise on what your project needs.

  • A properly built concrete retaining wall with adequate drainage can last several decades. The factors that shorten wall life are inadequate drainage causing hydrostatic pressure, freeze-thaw damage to walls poured with the wrong mix, and insufficient footing depth for the soil conditions. We address all three in how we build.

  • Yes. Site access constraints, narrow lots, and attached properties are standard conditions for our work throughout Flushing and the boroughs. We assess the access situation at the estimate visit and plan the construction sequence accordingly.
