The mix and the base preparation are the two factors that matter most. Exterior concrete in Queens needs to be air-entrained to resist the expansion caused by freeze-thaw cycles. The subbase needs to be compacted so it doesn't settle and cause the slab to crack. Proper control joints also give the concrete a place to move without surface cracking.
